One person was confirmed dead in an early morning accident on the Graphic Road yesterday when a 207 Benz bus skidded off the flyover under construction and fell under the bridge.
Seventeen other persons including the driver and his mate were seriously injured in the accident which occurred around 5:30am.

The accident occurred when the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle on the bypass which resulted in it skidding off the road, hitting a make-shift safety barricade before knocking one of the newly installed street lights on that section of the road and finally taking a 5-metre free-fall.

The injured are currently being treated at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital while the body of a middle-aged woman who died as a result has been deposited at the Korle-Bu morgue for preservation.

ACP Angwubutoge Awuni, the commanding officer of the National Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (N/MTTU), has ordered the arrest of the owner of the 207 Benz bus.

According to him, Frank Obeng, 24, the driver of the vehicle with registration number AS 336 V, was inexperienced to handle a passenger bus.

He noted that investigations revealed that Frank had a licence B and is also underage to handle a passenger vehicle, according to the Road Traffic Act.

Drivers with licence B are not supposed to handle commercial vehicles. Licence B is supposed to be used for private vehicles and not commercial.

Drivers with licence C, who are above 25 years, are allowed to use commercial vehicles in this country.

The 23-seater bus was travelling from Ablekuma to Accra.

The bus, at the time of the accident, was carrying 18 persons, most of whom were market women.

ACP Awuni said the 17 victims sustained various degrees of injury.

The driver, according to the police boss, was comatose after the accident.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness account indicated that the driver, who was speeding, plunged onto the railway line.

The eyewitness said when the bus got to Obetsebi-Lamptey roundabout, the ignition failed to respond but the driver managed to restart it.
